Boiler Breakdown? 5 Things to Check Before Calling an Emergency Plumber

Engineer inspecting a boiler

There\'s nothing quite like the sinking feeling when you realise your boiler has stopped working – especially on a cold winter morning or when you\'re looking forward to a hot shower. Before you reach for the phone to call an emergency plumber, there are a few simple things you can check yourself that might get your heating back on without the need for a call-out.

Important Safety Note

If you smell gas, see signs of a gas leak, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the property immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Never attempt to fix gas problems yourself.

1. Check the Boiler Pressure

One of the most common reasons for a boiler to stop working is low pressure. Look at the pressure gauge on your boiler – it\'s usually a dial or digital display on the front. The needle or reading should be somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar (check your manual for the specific recommendation for your model).

If the pressure has dropped below 1 bar, this is likely your problem. Most boilers have a filling loop (a flexible pipe with a valve) that allows you to top up the pressure yourself. Here\'s how:

  • Locate the filling loop – usually underneath the boiler
  • Open the valve(s) slowly and watch the pressure gauge
  • When it reaches about 1.2-1.5 bar, close the valve(s)
  • Try your heating again

If the pressure keeps dropping regularly, there may be a leak in the system that needs professional attention, but a one-off top-up is perfectly safe to do yourself.

2. Check Your Thermostat and Controls

This might seem obvious, but it\'s worth checking your thermostat settings before assuming the worst. Questions to ask:

  • Is the thermostat set higher than the current room temperature?
  • Are the batteries in your thermostat still working? (Many wireless thermostats use batteries)
  • Is the timer set correctly? Could the clocks have changed or been accidentally adjusted?
  • Has someone accidentally switched the heating to "off" or "summer" mode?

Try turning the thermostat up to maximum and see if the boiler fires up. If it does, you know the issue was simply the temperature setting.

3. Check the Power Supply

Your boiler needs electricity to operate its controls, even though it burns gas for heat. Check:

  • Is the boiler switched on at the wall/socket?
  • Has a fuse tripped in your consumer unit (fuse box)?
  • Does the boiler display show any error codes?

If the fuse has tripped, reset it and see if the boiler restarts. If it trips again immediately, there\'s likely an electrical fault that needs a professional.

4. Check if Your Gas Supply is Working

A simple way to check if gas is reaching your home is to try another gas appliance, such as your gas hob. If the hob lights normally, the gas supply is fine. If nothing gas-powered is working, check:

  • Is there a gas outage in your area? (Check with your gas supplier)
  • Is your gas meter valve open?
  • Do you have credit on your meter if you're on a prepayment plan?

5. Check the Condensate Pipe (In Cold Weather)

Modern condensing boilers have a condensate pipe that drains away acidic water produced during operation. In freezing conditions, this pipe can freeze up and block, causing the boiler to shut down for safety.

The condensate pipe is usually a white or grey plastic pipe that exits your property to an external drain. If it\'s frozen:

  • Pour warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section
  • Use a hot water bottle or heat pack wrapped around the pipe
  • Once thawed, reset your boiler (usually by pressing and holding the reset button)

When to Call a Professional

If you\'ve worked through these checks and your boiler still isn\'t working, it\'s time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Signs that definitely require professional help include:

  • Error codes on the display that you can't clear
  • Strange noises (banging, kettling, or gurgling)
  • Water leaking from the boiler
  • A yellow or orange flame (should be blue)
  • Black marks or staining around the boiler
  • The boiler keeps switching itself off
